History

Kirkmichael has a rich and fascinating history and settlements in the Strathardle Glen can be traced back to 200BC.

The rich pasture surrounding the village has been used to keep livestock for hundreds of years. Kirkmichael was the site of a market where livestock would be traded in medieval times and is also famous for the Caterans (after which the Cateran Trail walk is named), a group of cattle thieves who wreaked havoc in the Glen.

Many battles have taken place in the Glen and Oliver Cromwell stationed his troops in the village in 1653 leading to a battle in the village churchyard. Clans sympathetic to the Jacobite cause also stayed in the village in 1715 before moving south into battle.
